Spanish Language Collection

Kannapolis City and the surrounding area revealed a need for more resources in Spanish for adults to support a growing population. To better support our community, we are expanding our Spanish language resources in a variety of formats including print books, digital resources, magazines, audio books, and more.

Description: Referencia Latina is a database by EBSCO.

​

Annotation: This resource contains a combination of quality English translations and Spanish original works from over 150 books and encyclopedias and nearly 40 periodicals on topics such as art, history, health, and entertainment. Topics are mostly concerned with Latin America, but address international issues as well that may be of interest to Spanish speaking patrons. (Arriola, 2019)

La casa de los espiritus

By Isabel Allende

​​​​Description: The Truebas are wealthy estate owners and Esteban Trueba leads an abusive and privileged childhood. He eventually meets and marries Clara, a clairvoyant woman, and the story follows the turbulent lives of their family through the decades.

​

Annotation: This is a classic fiction novel of Latin America complete with magic realism and leftward political context.

En el tiempo de las mariposas

By Julia Alvarez

​

Description: The Mirabal sisters each eventually discover the courage necessary to rise up against Dominican dictator Trujillo. They fight in their own ways to escape oppression and join in the struggle to advance civil rights.

​

Annotation: Alvarez masterfully uses language to celebrate women's courage and human fraility. This is a landmark Dominican novel from a well known Dominican voice.

Los niños perdidos

By Valeria Luiselli

 

Description: An essay that the author constructs around her time as a translator and the forty questions she would ask children to match them to a lawyer. Upon learning the stories of these children, Luiselli frame them for the reader as a testimony.

​

Annotation: Los niños perdidos is an important short essay that chronicles the political issues relevant to our times. Luiselli humanizes and gives voice to children who have been often only the subject of reporting.

Annotation: This novel won the 2018 Premio Herralde for its unrelenting ambition to share the sometimes uncomfortable and often unheard narratives of people living with disabilities.

Description: David Salas, protagonist in this novel, is a linguist on a trip to Spain. He runs into an old friend and together to begin to unravel the historic and well kept mysteries of the grail.

 

Annotation: Winner of the Premio Planeta in 2017, El fuego invisible is a gripping thriller that will intrigue readers who seek a tale of history and adventure.

Annotation: This database contains authoritative overviews on popularly search topics within health and wellness including diseases, childcare, aging, and first aid. The interface has quicklinks to the most popular topics and can be search in English and Spanish.

Annotation: Digitalia Public Library offers a wide range of ebooks, more than 4,000, from Spanish and Latin American publishers. Includes books for children, science fiction, history, classics, and more.

Description: A collection of Spanish language films and documentaries available for streaming.

 

Annotation: Digitalia Films is a subscription based streaming service that offers films from Argentina, Brazil, Cuba, France, Mexico, Spain, and the United States. Public Performance Rights apply to the entire collection.

Rosetta Stone

 

Description: Rosetta Stone is language learning software that is accessible through computers, mobile devices, and tablets. It offers patrons a wide range of languages to learn, including English.

 

Annotation: This software utilizes immersion techniques for a visually rich and overall effective means of language learning. It comprehensively gives instruction with reading, writing, speaking, and listening, and has a friendly user interface to track progress.

Leamos

 

Description: Leamos is an online Spanish literacy tool designed to teach Spanish-speaking adult how to read and write.

 

Annotation: Leamos is broken into modules to teach basic literacy skills to adults in Spanish using the most common parts of the language that are not specific to any one country’s dialect. It meets standards set by the Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment System and is approved as a pre-ESL course.

Brainfuse: Adult Learning Center

 

Description: Patrons connect live with a tutor online to help them through a variety of school and career goals with coaching, practice tests, and other online resources

 

Annotation: The Brainfuse Adult Learning center helps patrons through high school equivalency exams, career readiness, citizenship preparation, Microsoft Office tutorials, and writing a resume. Many of these resources are available in Spanish, including connecting with a Spanish-speaking tutor.

Description: This magazine is a Spanish language version of People that covers mostly entertainment news, pop culture, and real life stories.

 

Annotation: People magazine is an established magazine that is read throughout the country. People en Español searches for stories that interest their consumer base not only on the premise of shared language, but shared culture.

Review: Echo Media

Description: Foreign Affairs Latinoamerica is a journal that focuses on international relations, especially those having to do with Latin America.

​

Annotation: This journal is a branch of the long standing and reputable Foreign Affairs journal. It provides authoritative articles on international news and policies through English translations and Spanish original works.
